You might want to watch out for the zombies if you attend the Lawton High School Fall Fest on Saturday. Word is out that a mad scientist on the loose is obsessed with abducting students and bringing them back from the dead.
It is all in good fun of course. LHS drama students are the brainchildren behind the mad scientist scare attraction, which will be set up under the LHS stage.
“They (students) really wanted to do something with zombies,” said drama teacher Arline Taylor. “It kind of evolved from there.”
Drama students have spent considerable time creating the lab for the mad scientist under the stage area. Earlier this week, students were blowing up body bags for the “trophy” room where missing persons will be set up. Attendees also will make their way through a graveyard.
“There will be zombies and jump scares, but no one will be touched,” said Taylor, adding that children are not expected to go through the scare attraction.
But there will be plenty of other events for young children to enjoy: like numerous games, concession stands, and trunkfuls of candy. Taylor said the center two aisles of the parking lot will be devoted to trunk-or-treating. She said children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
The annual Fall Fest is a collaboration among the drama department and other clubs and organizations at LHS and Central Middle School, Taylor said, with each organization deciding what event or activity it wants to sponsor.
“The drama department coordinates everything,” she said. “We invite everyone to participate.”
This year the Student Council and vocal music students will co-sponsor a karaoke stage and Central Middle School students will operate a concession stand.
The event is free and open to the public. Admission is one canned food item per person and will be collected by LHS JROTC students at the gate, Taylor said. Those who forget their canned food item may make a donation. All proceeds will go to the Lawton Food Bank.
“It seems like every year they are needing more and more assistance,” Taylor said.
The event will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday in the LHS parking lot, weather permitting, Taylor said. All events are free except for the concession stand.
